1 Timothy 2:9-15
What Women Want
Sunday, February 24, 2008
I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and
propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but
with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11A woman should learn in
quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or
to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13For Adam was
formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was
the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women will be
saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with
propriety. 1 Timothy 2:9-15
Three Common Mistakes in
Understanding Scripture:
1. The "One
Verse" mistake
2. The "Old
Covenant" mistake
3. The "Literal
Translation" mistake
When we look at Scripture, we
need to look at the whole thing, we need to understand where and when
it was written, and we need to ask "Why?"
Who was Artemis?
1. A goddess of the
hunt
2. Shunned Men
3. Goddess of
childbirth
Why was Timothy
written? To encourage a young man who needed it!
The Problem in verse 9 was
due to two things:
1. The Culture of
Artemis Worship
2. The Attitude in
coming to worship
Greek words:
Verse 11
Eremos = quiet
Hesuchios = peaceful
Hupotage = choosing to obey
Doulos = forced obedience (slavery)
Verse 12
Authenteo = to usurp authority
Verses 13-14 are not meant to
put women in their place, but to prevent them from trying to usurp authority
Why is TES important?
It reveals that Paul is doing what he has always done!
How does this apply to my
walk with Christ?
