1 Timothy 3:1-7
I-LESSON LEADERSHIP 101
Sunday, March 9, 2008
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: If
anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble
task.
2 Now the overseer must be above
reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable,
hospitable, able to teach,
3 not given to drunkenness, not
violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
4 He must manage his own family
well and see that his children obey him with proper respect.
5 (If anyone does not know how to
manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?)
6 He must not be a recent convert,
or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.
7 He must also have a good
reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the
devil's trap.
̃
Overseer
- Minister— Bishop— Elder: the office of minister or overseer or elder is a
"good work." The word "good or NOBLE IN THE NIV" (kalou PWS: 1743)
means honorable,
excellent, beneficial, productive.
The word overseer (episkopes) referred to a
pastor, elder, or anyone
who exercised an overseeing position.
Desire means "to set one's heart” on something
11 It was he who gave some to be
apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers,
12 to prepare God's people for
works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
̃ Blameless
or Above Reproach… To live a life
that cannot be spoken against by the enemy.
̃ The elder or overseer must be "the
husband of one wife." Don’t be married to the job.
̃ Temperate…
moderation
would be the key, self-controlled, and watchful, sound, and balanced judgment, or even common
sense.
̃ Self controlled… to live wisely, to be sensible, disciplined.
̃ RESPECTABLE… is the picture of a person who lives in harmony with the way
God created the world to function.
̃ Hospitality… It is the simple acts of doing kind things to people when you have the opportunity.
̃
TEACH… Instructing those who have not asked Christ into
their lives, instructing those who need to know what it means to be a Christ follower, and
instruct those who need to grow
in Christ and to teach leaders.
̃
He must not
be addicted to drink (a drunkard).
̃
VIOLENT…not to be physically destructive.
̃
Gentleness… A gentle
person is free
from harshness, sternness, or violence.
̃ Quarrelsome… not to exhibits an argumentative personality.
̃ Love of money… Leaders must have a proper attitude for
handling money. Money can’t be a spiritual leaders god.
̃
Family First…The
qualifications for both elders and deacons hinge on the man's ability to manage
his own household.
̃ New believers should become secure
and strong in the faith before taking
leadership roles in the church.
̃ You must care enough about spiritually lost people to be an example.
